As one of India's leading 20th century artists she is considered the mother of modern Indian art. The painting was held in the collection of Sher-Gil's fellow student at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Boris Taslitzky.  Franco-Russian artist Taslitzky was Sher-Gil's muse, lover, and artistic comrade until they parted ways in 1934, a year after this work was painted.
