A 22ct gold commemorative gold medal bearing the years 1874-1965 with a bust of Sir Winston Churchill will be going under the hammer at Toovey's this week. The coin was made by L.E. Pinches and is similar to a coin made by Pinches which was sold at Bonhams in October 2012 for £3 240, inclusive of premium.


At Christie's in 1995, a collection of 6 medals commemorating Prime Ministers: "Robert Walpole. 1676-1745," "Pitt The Elder. 1708-1778," "Pitt The Younger. 1759-1806," "Benjamin Disraeli. 1804-1881," "William Gladstone. 1809-1898" and "Winston Churchill. 1874-1965," sold for £2 025. Check out more realised prices for commemorative coins here.

Britain has a rich history of commemorating prime ministers with coins, last year the Royal Mint makes £20 piece in honour of wartime British Prime Minister 50 years after his death.

The Royal Mint first produced a commemorative coin bearing an image of Sir Winston Churchill to mark his death in 1965.
