One of the works is an oil on board study of male bathers on a beach, which the vendor purchased from a car boot sale, having no idea of the artist's identity, until they were appraised at Ewbank's.

Quaker Henry Scott Tuke (1858-1929) was born in York. At the age of 17, he enrolled at the Slade School of Art. He gained a scholarship to continue his training in Italy and Paris. in 1883, he moved to Newlyn, Cornwall, where he joined a small group of artists who were working under the band of English Impressionism.

There is a second piece in the sale which is thought to be by Tuke, an unsigned study for a larger works. One shows the head and torso of a boy seated on rocks, the reverse portrays a boy bending forwards on the beach. Tuke's paintings are held in major collections worldwide.

The sale also includes Seated Figure by Argentina-born Eileen Agar. The piece was purchased directly from the artist in the 1950s and has remained in the collection of the same family ever since.

After studying in Paris, Agar began exhibiting as a member of the London Group, and, at the recommendation of Henry Moore, she was included as the only British artist in the International Surrealist Exhibition, alongside Picasso and Miró.

Another highlight of the sale is an impressive single-owner collection of over 35 contemporary works by John Rosser, which were consigned directly by the artist to mark his 65th year of working.
