The Collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller - a given success for Christie's and for charity The Collection of David and Peggy Rockefeller - a given success for Christie's and for charity

One spring, which in international media has been dominated by Christie's antique auctions as well as classic and modern painting of the Rockefeller's extensive and impressive collection, has also offered a variety of world records for design and cars.

Fourth most expensive painting on auction ever

The two masterpieces that received the most attention this spring is Picasso's painting "Fillette à la corbeille fleurie" from 1905, from the Rockefeller couple's incredible art collection sold at Christie's for $115.2 million, as well as Amedeo Modigliani's painting "Nu couché (sur le côté gauche)", which was hammered for just over $157 million at Sotheby's in May, which set a new record for Sotheby's.

It was not long ago that the painting, which is considered Amadeo Modigliani's largest, was up for sale. Already in 2003, the nude portrait was sold at Christie's, but then for a sixth of the night's record listing, a mere $26.9 million. A slight return on invested capital.

Where the money is

The spring season took place after an autumn largely characterized by several groundbreaking world records, not least the final and sensational sale of Leonardo da Vinci's "Salvator Mundi" sold for an unimaginable $ 450 million.

The painting which became the world's most expensive single sale in auction times, was surprisingly in the Post-War and Contemporary Evening Sale in New York, instead of at the classic auction of Old Masters, the main attraction, where in previous years has seen this record been set. A conscious choice by Christie's who spent 100 million dollars already in advance when guaranteed the sale of the painting.

A few years ago, the trend of curated auctions was established where it was prepared to move on from past boundaries with separate categories, age and style epochs in order to attract a new, younger audience through a more varied range.

But above all, the primary focus lied with encouraging the buyers of contemporary art where the price trend has completely bolted in recent years to open their wallet for pieces other than works by renowned artists such as Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter and Andy Warhol.

Curated focus

At first, it seemed interesting with a fresh update with the goal to attract new target groups. However, in most cases today the auction houses’ approach feels more confusing than encouraging. Particularly with those houses where marketing budgets do not help to clearly inform potential buyers about the offer.

The idea is good, but the outcome is not always optimal. Especially not when the overall quality is suffering and the effect feels sought. Although the actual showings feel more inspiring and more beautiful with the mixture, the result has often been doubtful when it has not been possible to follow the concept all throughout.

Should we continue on this track, it is about being flexible and focusing on the total offer at each auction and having a clear marketing strategy for all categories, if we want it to last.

The increase in collectable categories

The Barnebys Online Auction Report - Tomorrow - The view from today shows that watches and jewels are the fastest growing categories within auctions. The watch industry is expected to trade 100 billion a year globally, and the secondary market for watches has grown steadily in recent years, which promoted the first-hand market. However, several Nordic auction houses have in recent years fallen behind impressive results and world record prices.

New Danish record for Rolex Daytona New Danish record for Rolex Daytona

Most recently, the Danish auction house, Bruun Rasmussen, sold a Rolex Daytona Cosmograph from 1964-65, more known as the "Paul Newman" watch, for 297,000 euros including buyer commission, which was a new record for a wristwatch at an auction in Denmark.

Design reaches new heights

Design continues to surprise at fantastic prices. But it is far from everything else that brings millions. Prices for a lot of the Scandinavian supply have definitely slowed down, and the experts are struggling to find new unique items from partially unknown or at least not so well-known designers.

Another table that set the new record was Isamu Noguchi's unique tableware in pink marble, oak and aluminium, costing the buyer over $1.6 million at the US auction house Wright.

Philips is the season's winner

Both world-leading auction houses Christie's and Sotheby's saw a decline in their London Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sales in June compared to last year's sale. Meanwhile, up and coming auction house Phillips managed to sell out their entire 20th Century and Contemporary Art London Evening Sale, which was followed the next day by the best Day Sale in the history of the auction house.

Sotheby's and Phillips together sold post-war and contemporary art for 59% more than in June last year according to ArtTactics compilation.

Dina Amin, head of 20th century and contemporary art for Europe at one of the fastest growing auction houses, Phillips, who strategically have chosen to focus on design, modern and contemporary art and watches, claims that Phillips has increased the sales of art in the first half of 2018 by 81% compared to the previous year.

For several years, Phillips has had a clear internal and external strategy, aiming to reach tomorrow's great collectors. Having started with the market's most popular categories, the house has gained an impressive market position.

The next category that Phillips wants to be one of the foremost in is the "Classic Cars" market, which has been one of the most important growth categories in recent years.

Otherwise, just through the online actions was there a huge growth in the auction world. A successful future forecast, however, may have diverted off course as more and more players have difficulty seeing the expected growth. This is largely due to that the supply is not enough when most auction houses suddenly go from having 1- 4 auctions per season, to hammering off large amounts of quality goods every day online.

But in many cases, auction houses that use costly platforms realize how they slowly annihilate themselves by giving away both brand, customer and ability to grow organically with Google's help to the platforms, thus losing the ability to attract new consignments.

Even the Danish auction house Bruun Rasmussen, who last year presented its best year ever with a turnover that exceeded DKK 500 million, continues to be strong during the spring when it hammered off quality goods of 78.2 million Danish Kroner.

Bruun Rasmussen, one of the Nordic region's leading auction houses, is becoming stronger in growing categories such as watches, coins, wine and, above all, online auctions where Lauritz has previously been superior in Denmark and the Nordic region.

Even though the summer holidays have just begun, auction houses remain busy to catch the next big fish and intend to use as much bait as possible for the next auction and the next one...
