A new record was set for Le Corbusier as Femme rouge at pelote verte sold for $4.6 million, trumping the $3.3 million record made when one of the artist's sculpture sold for $3.3 million in 2014 at Christie's.

However, the real star of the night was Willem de Kooning's Untitled XXVIII, 1977, which sold  $11.4 million against a $10-15 million estimate. A buzz was in the sale room around this piece as it was the first time it had ever been brought to auction.

The Modern and Impressionist sales in New York this week at Phillips, Christie's and Sotheby's are expected to bring in $1.4 billion.
