During the early years of the twentieth century there was an unprecedented demand for magazine and book illustrations. Along with Fern Bisel Peat several talented female artists stood out in an industry dominated by male artists including Mabel Lucie Attwell, Kate Greenaway and Beatrix Potter. During the 1940's Peat, as art director for Children's Playmate magazine, not only illustrated most of the magazine's covers but created the paper dolls, paper toys & story illustrations that the magazine became known for. Many of the illustrations she created for A Child's Garden of Verses published in 1940 including Lot 231 Rain are up for auction.

Also included at auction is Lot 218 The Runaway Toys, the cover illustration for The Runaway Toys Wish You a Merry Christmas, published to great acclaim in 1932. Lot 227 is one of Peat's original cover illustrations for Eugene Field's story of The Sugar-Plum Tree.
