The work is also Pétillon's largest to date. The artist is famed for his photography series Invasion which features white balloons in a variety of settings including abandoned houses and forest settings.

Heartbeat, which will be display in Covent Garden's piazza until 27th September, is a beautiful display of 100 000 balloons and thin strips of lighting, which mimic a heartbeat as the lights beat on and off.

In an interview with the Guardian, Pétillon said:

"I want to change people's point of view, their perspective of a place they see every day and never really look at, a swimming pool, a field: if I suddenly put something strange in it like these balloons you will see it differently. I don't want my works to be seen just as decoration."

Accompanying the display will be a pop-up exhibition of Invasion photographs.
