Grebenshikov began painting in 1976, his works are best described as pieces of puzzles from the world of mythological history. Early in his painting career he experimented with landscapes which were associated with urban folklore. Grebenshikov's works have qualities of surrealism and expressionism, but are harder to define than that, and therefore can be placed in a category of their own.

The Three Theorems of Lilac at MacDougall's follows Grebenshikov's first solo museum show at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2013 to 2014.
