The Spanish and Italian Old Masters scholar was born in London to Anglo-Italian parents. Having studied at the Courtauld Institute, completing his doctorate on 17th century artist Jusepe de Ribera, Finaldi is now finishing a catalogue of the artist's drawings. He was curator of Later Italian and Spanish paintings at the National Gallery from 1992-2002.

He moved to Prado, Spain to take up the role of deputy director responsible for collections and research. Here he headed several successful exhibitions including Titian, Manet, Turner, Raphael and El Greco.

Finaldi commented he is looking to "develop an exciting exhibition programme."
