The next stop in British art history, is another work portraying Britian's industry, Laurence Stephen Lowry's Industrial scene, 1951. In a statement from Christie's, the house explains the importance of Lowry's landscape of Britain and, in particular, the North.

''Lowry was fascinated with exploring the changing face of industry on both the landscape and the human figure.''

The work has been given an estimate of £1.5 million to £2.5 million. If prices for Lowry in the last 5 years are anything to go by, the work is likely to smash this estimate. Check out realised prices for Lowry on Barnebys here.

The last stop in the journey is Francis Bacon's No. 2 of Lying Figure with Hypodermic Syringe, 1968. The portrait of Henrietta Moraes, the muse for many of Soho subculture artists including Lucian Freud, has been estimated to sell around the £20 million mark.

The work sold for $15 million at Sotheby's in 2006 when it was consigned from the collection of Roger Vanthournout, surpassing its pre sale estimate of $9 million to $12 million. Search realised prices for Francis Bacon here.

''Ever since James Christie first opened his doors for business in 1766, in St James’s London, where the headquarters remain today, Christie’s has championed British art and artists, with both Reynolds and Gainsborough among the regular visitors to Christie’s salerooms,'' the house released in a statement.

As well as this stellar sale, the celebrations will include an exhibition open to the public, which will run from 17th June-15th July, showcasing some of the most important works of British art that have been through Christie's doors.
