Art Nouveau was a break away from styles which had historical roots and were traditional in form. The designs from the movement were more modern and inspiration came from the natural world as well as pattern and geometry. The Art Deco period of the 1920s followed the Art Nouveau movement. It gained popularity again in the 1960s and is extremely popular today as it revived quality craftsmanship.

The functional element to Art Nouveau works paved the way for its predecessors which included Modernism and Bauhaus. Some of the most iconic works of the period include Hector Guimard's entrance gates to the Paris subway, some later works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Aubrey Beardsley's The Peacock Skirt illustration which graced the cover of Oscar Wilde's 1892 play Salome.
