Andy Warhol was an American artist, graphic artist, and filmmaker. He is considered to be the icon of the Pop Art Movement.
Warhol studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology 1945-1949 and then began his career as Art Director for the publications Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. His successes in advertising garnered him the Art Directors Club Medal in 1957.
Warhol became known for his silkscreens where he portrayed famous people like Marilyn Monroe. He also used the silkscreen technique to portray various types of reproduced images and installations of consumable items such as cans of Campbell’s Soup and Brillo cartons. According to Warhol, beauty can be found all around us, everywhere.
From 1963 onwards he created or participated in films produced in his own studio, “The Factory,” which also became a gathering place for New York's bohemian set. Warhol documented everything with his movie camera, and later also with a Polaroid camera. Many famous people were filmed during these so-called screen tests, including Bob Dylan and Salvador Dalí.
In accordance with Warhol's will, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was founded in New York in 1987 and the Andy Warhol Museum opened in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1994.
