About the object

IN MANNER OF THOMAS LE CLEAR, NA [1818-82] OIL ON CANVAS, C. 1860, 26 1/2" X 34", NEW YORK STATE SCE:26 1/2" x 34". Small boy standing on a crate, newspaper on the street reads "Buffalo"; unsigned; framed. Thomas Le Clear was born in 1818 at Oswego, New York and died in Rutherford, N.J. in 1882. He exhibited "The Itinerant" at the National Academy in 1862. "The Reprimand" was exhibited at the Art Union, New York. He occupied a studio with his friend Albert Bierstadt at No 1,271 Broadway. Famous pictures include "The Marble Players" and "Young America". See obituary in New York Times Nov 28, 1882. jw Provenance of painting: family owned from before 1929, it was most likely purchased by the owner's grandmother Lucy Millard (Beaumont), who died in 1929 (and made buying trips to Europe), but after his grandfather, Dr. Beaumont, died in 1890. Passed on then to the consignor's father, Joseph M. Wilbur, and upon his death in 1960 was passed on to the consignor's mother, Helen Black, from whom the consignor inherited it upon his mother's death in 1985. The consignor's family were tenants on a plantation which burned down in 1943 and from which the painting was saved. (rev.20071212)

As viewed under UV light in the unopened frame: turns somewhat green under blacklight so that a complete UV analysis is not possible, however, what is showing is c. 1% overpainting found in the UR along the edge and the LR corner; overall craquelure is just starting to cup - especially along the top; paint loss in the very bottom right center area with there being a c. 2 3/8" x 2 1/4" area with significant paint loss and then a smaller area to its right measuring c. 1/2" x 3" where there is much less paint loss; canvas needs restretching [it is wavy in the UL corner]; needs some cleaning; not lined or patched; original stretchers; fabulous gilt period frame is slightly nicked and chipped and has cracking in the mitered corners.
