About the object

1940's Babe Ruth Single Signed Baseball, PSA NM-MT+ 8.5. When Steve Grad, lead authenticator of PSA/DNA, characterized the presented sphere as the "finest Babe Ruth signature I've ever seen on a baseball," we were pleased, though not surprised. We certainly shared his opinion, and couldn't envision the possibility of a superior example. The Babe's black fountain pen ink, applied to the sweet spot of a creamy OAL (Harridge) baseball, is as timeless as the legend of the man himself, and as unflinchingly bold. This is not a lot for the collector merely checking names off of a list, but rather for the most discerning of hobby connoisseurs who understand the inherent value that accompanies the term "finest known." Despite the famous generosity of the Babe which has supplied the modern hobby with thousands of signed baseballs, only the fortunate few are afforded a window into the past such as this, an encounter with a baseball essentially unchanged from its moment in the game's most talented hands. And only one collector can claim the definitive example of the hobby's most fundamental building block. The NM-MT+ 8.5 grade is calculated from a rather conservative rating of 9/10 for the signature quality and 7/10 for the baseball itself, the inevitable fading of the factory stamping and all but imperceptible shift in tone the mitigating factors here. An extra half point is provided for the enormous "eye appeal," and to further mathematically separate the piece from the rest of the pack. The ball remains encapsulated in its PSA/DNA grading cube and is accompanied by a full grading LOA. Full grading LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
