About the object

Each cup-shaped bowl applied with two trails, the lower section moulded with ribs, set on a ribbed knop over a rib-moulded blue-tinted conical foot with folded rim, the honeycomb-moulded domed cover with gilt bud finial\nTogether with six others (Christie's, 28th March 2000, lots 35, 37 and 38), these cups are believed to have been found either in a church or convent at Grazetto in Italy. Furthermore, an example may be seen in the hand of a young man in a painting by Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530). The portrait of Domenico di Jacopo di Matteo, called 'Beccuccio Bicchieraio' is now in the National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh and is believed to be circa 1528-30. Beccuccio Bicchieraio was a glassmaker and a friend of the artist.
