notes

Surviving multiples of the imperforate essay are elusive and virtually non-existent. Although John N. Luff stated that he had seen a complete sheet of one hundred, its whereabouts has never been established. In 1925, M. D. Chow wrote that he purchased a strip of five taken from a strip of ten offered by a London dealer. The strip of five from the Sir Percival David collection was subsequently split up.
