Text in Italian and Latin. Letterpress titles in Italian and Latin with engraved vignettes, engraved additional titles on versos of Italian letterpress titles by Lorenzo Lorenzi after Giuseppe Zocchi, engraved portrait of Giovanni Gerini by Violante Vanni after Zocchi, engraved royal arms in vols I-III and engraved dedication by Lorenzi in vol. IV, engraved initials. 468 hand-coloured engraved plates by and after Lorenzi and Vanni (of 600, lacks 17, 86, 116, 134, 146, 210, 222, 269, 290, 353, 362, 366 and vol. V plates 481-600). Late 19th-century green half morocco gilt [endpapers watermarked 'MICHALLET'], gilt spines with bird tools, morocco lettering-pieces, yellow edges (somewhat scuffed and rubbed, some marking and partial fading). Provenance: occasional pencilled notes in English in a 19th-century hand on the margins of some text leaves and plates -- pencilled note on vol. I front free endpaper recording purchase for £13.13.- on 22 June 1923 -- Library of Arthur Sanderson & Sons (probably purchased by Harold William Sanderson (1863-1958); labels removed from endpapers).\n\nFIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE HALF-DOZEN OR SO GREAT BIRD BOOKS IN THE COLLECTOR'S SENSE' (Fine Bird Books). The work was issued in fascicules containing 12 plates each between 1767 and 1776; presumably the subscription to the present set lapsed or was cancelled before publication was completed.
