About the object

[ Postal History - Foochowfoo ] SPECTACULAR HONG KONG FRANKING COVER TO GERMANY WITH BOXED BLACK "HAINAN/SAMAH/LAND/POST" & 2-RING RED "HAI/SAMAH/NAN" MARKINGS; Most attractive 24th July 1894 small env. to Wilhelmshaven, franked by Hong Kong 1891 10c purple on red, neatly tied by two fine 9th August 1894 "HONG KONG/B" c.d.s.'s; with superb strikes of the black boxed "HAINAN/SAMAH/LAND/POST" mark (with manuscript "24/7/94" in centre) and the red 2-ring "HAI/SAMAH/NAN" mark nearby. There are fine "CUSTOMS/KIUNGCHOW" (7th Aug.) and "WILSHVN. ANK." (15th Sept.) backstamps. Very rare example of this short-lived Hainan Island Local Post service on a cover to an overseas destination. Webb recorded only the "D'Almada" manuscript regd. cover to Jamaica (from which stamps may have been removed?), two Diercking covers to Germany and two stampless local covers from this Local Post. This is therefore one of only three Land Post covers recorded with Hong Kong frankings. The last auction record of one of the Diercking covers that we have traced was of Sept. 1992, when the "Bartlett" cover (much less attractive than the one offered here) fetched HK$77, 000 ( E5,833 at that date). This is arguably the most Important Exhibition Item in the Norman Bennett Collection. Superb. [Purchased by Norman from the RL sale on 12th Nov. 1969 for E255.] PHOTO -
