Woodcut ornament on title-page, decorative woodcut initials; inner margin of title-page and *2 repaired with part of the "A" in "A Don Cosimo" finished in early manuscript facsimile, two blank leaves cut away, minor repairs to small holes along inside margin of quire *, two blanks cut away before quire A. Contempoary vellum, shelfmark on spine "IS | I | 9", plain endpapers, edges sprinkled in red and blue.   One of 2 known copies (the other is at Lambeth) of the first Italian translation of the Essays.\nThe first Italian translation of the Essays, one of two known copies, according to STC (the other is located at Lambeth Palace). The dedication to Cosimo de Medici is signed by Tobias Matthew, a close friend of Bacon's and later Archbishop of York (see lot 41).  According to Gibson, the attribution of the Italian translation in the British Museum catalogue is unsubstantiated. "In the preface, at p. x, of The Conversion of Sir Tobie Matthew, ed. A. H. Mathew, 1904, referring to this transl. we read: 'This was not by Tobie, but the epistle dedicatory to the Duke of Genoa, which prefaces the book was from his pen.'"
