Antique Print-SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST-Hemling-Bouts-Strixner-c.1828
Antique print, titled: 'Der hl. Johannes der Taufer.' - (Saint John the Baptist.) Originally the left wing of the Three King Altar, named 'The Pearl of Brabant' in the home Chapel of the Snoy family in Mechelen. Painting now in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. Each colour on this plate is printed from separate lithographic stones. Sheets are attached at the top to larger brown coloured carrier with titles. This gorgeous large old antique lithographic print originates from the monumental early lithographic work: 'Die Sammlung Alt- Nieder- un Ober-Deutscher Gamalde der Bruder Boisseree und Bertram, lithographiert von J.N. Strixner.', published in Stuttgart 1821-1836. This work was published in 38 parts (Lieferungen), each containing 3 lithographs in a wrapper. This work depicts the painting collection of the brothers Sulpiz and Melchior Boisseree and Johann Bertram. This collection was acquired in this period by King Ludwig of Bavaria, and Strixner finished this work in Munich. At the time it became popular to record famous collections through lithography. The parts of this work were sold for 10 Gulden/Forint early on. Ref: W. Nr. 69. This plate was drawn on stone by or under direction of Strixner after a 1828 design by Bergman and published as plate 3 of the twentysecond published part (Zweiundzwanzigste Lieferung). Colour tone and crayon style lithograph on wove (vellin) paper. Made by 'under direction of Johann Nepomuk Strixner' after 'Johann Hemling after Dierick Bouts'. Johann Nepomuk Strixner (German 1782-1855), was one of the earliest lithographers. Educated in drawing and engraving he became a student in the workshop of the inventor of Lithography (invented c. 1796) Alois Senefelder and participated in the early experimenting and projects. He then became a professional lithographer helping to record famous Munich Museum collections. After being hired by the Boisseree brothers he was send to Paris to master the French development in lithography. Very good, given age. Mounted at the top to original verge paper carrier. Carrier with some creasing and an occasional small tear in paper edges. Plate fine. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
