After Zeus defeated the monster Typhon, a being of fire and storm, he buried it beneath Sicily. So says Ovid: Typhon’s right lies under Cape Pelorus, his left under Pachynus, his legs under Lilybaion, and on his head lies Etna. When he rises, the earth trembles, and from his jaws he spews ash and flames through the mountain. His name still sounds in the word Taifun today. For millennia he has raged beneath the rock, and for millennia the rock endures. This skull contains both. Across a black, metallic-appearing base run colorful, sulphuretted-looking planes in yellow, green and orange. Rust-red veins cut through them and seem to tell of embers, destruction, and caustic acid: dark, almost hellish, and yet always colorful and wild. And yet the skull does not appear distant or cruel. It remains mighty and calm at once, like a rock in the surf, against which all tumult breaks. Material: Hiso Jasper – iron-rich, jasper-like stone (trade name) Origin: China Measurements: 5.1 x 3.9 x 3.3 cm Weight: 112 g Special features: Black, metallic-appearing base with color-intense yellow-green-orange zones and rust-red veins; on the back of the head large colored areas
