1722 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 5.2-C.2, W-12810. Rarity-5. Second Type, Harp at Right. AU-58 (PCGS). Struck from a late state of the reverse die, the diagnostics of which are described by Syd Martin (2007) as: (1) Heavy die sinking through center, making central portion weak. (2) Chip near edge at K3. (3) Break at cross of "A". (4) General rust, heavy among the strings. Reverse detail is sharper toward the border, where a full frame of denticles is seen. The obverse is also well centered, better struck and sharp apart from softness to the central high point of King George's bust. There is a blush of rose color in the left reverse field that is associated with trivial scale, otherwise both sides are toned in a lovely medium brown with tinges of pale olive. Planchet lightly flawed at the king's shoulder, tiny obverse carbon spot in the field between the nose and letter I in GRATIA. There are no other marks or blemishes, the texture hard and tight with considerable remnants of frosty luster evident as the surfaces are tilted into direct lighting. Really a lovely piece, ideal for Choice AU type purposes, but also highly desirable for specialists as a late die state example of this Martin number. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Chicago ANA Signature Auction of August 2015, lot 7002. PCGS# 170. NGC ID: 2ATB. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
