1723 Rosa Americana Penny. Martin 2.30-Eb.10, W-1278. Rarity-4. MS-63 (PCGS). 129.0 grains. A very handsome piece. Both sides are a combination of medium brown with considerable brassy-gold around the central devices and within other protected areas. The surfaces present as smooth and hard to the unaided eye, but show some light roughness and pitting under magnification. Fairly typical obverse strike, this side on Wood's Rosa Americana penny always seems more softly struck than the reverse, which here is typically sharp and crisp. It is possible that the obverse die served as the anvil. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex New Netherlands Coin Company stock; John J. Ford, Jr. Collection; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part IX, May 2005, lot 131. PCGS# 125. NGC ID: 2ASR. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
