1723 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 4.74-Gb.11, W-13120. Rarity-4. MS-64 RD (NGC). We have seen a lot of nice Wood's Hibernias, even a lot with mint color, but this example stands out as one of the very boldest and most original. The color is bright and impressive, not really mellowed at all, just showing a little bit of subtle specking across the surfaces. The surfaces are free of any significant marks or distractions, showing eye appeal that must closely resemble how this piece looked in the 18th century. Provenance: From the Winslet Collection. Earlier from Heritage's sale of the Old New England Collection, April 2014 CSNS Signature Auction, lot 3681; Heritage's sale of the Dickson Collection, August 2021 ANA Signature Auction, lot 3548. NGC Census (all die marriages of the issue): just three examples in all grades in the RD category, all at the MS-64 grade level. PCGS has certified four total coins as RD, none graded finer than this one. PCGS# 182. NGC ID: F7J4. Click here for certification details from NGC.
