1724 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 4.74-L.4, W-13730. Rarity-6. AU-58 (PCGS). 117.1 grains. A rare die pairing of the 1724-dated Hibernia halfpenny variety with no period after the date, in other words Syd Martin's L family of reverse dies. Warm autumn-orange brown in color on both sides. Some minor roughness in the fields, but this piece is well centered and boldly to sharply struck overall. A tiny, nearly hidden reverse rim nick about the last digit in the date is the only blemish of note, and it was instrumental in helping us identifying this coin from among several high grade 1724 Hibernia halfpennies of this variety in our (Stack's) Ford VII sale. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex E.H.A.'s sale of February 2, 1914, lot 28; F.C.C. Boyd estate; John J. Ford, Jr.; our (Stack's) sale of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part VII, January 2005, lot 87. Possibly also ex Philip Nelson (per F.C.C. Boyd). PCGS# 190. NGC ID: F7J9. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
