1747 Machin's Mills Halfpenny. Vlack 1-47A, W-7660. Rarity-5. GEORGIVS II, Group II. Fine-15 (PCGS). Coin alignment. A visually appealing, technically sound example of this distinctive American-made counterfeit halfpenny, attributed by Howes, Rosen, and Trudgen (HRT) to the workshop of John Bailey in New York City. Quality is superior for the assigned grade, the surfaces smooth in hand with mentionable planchet roughness confined to the obverse north of center, both sides with only a few well scattered marks that are light enough to be overlooked in most viewing situations. A bit muted with underlying brightness, which we see as evidence of an old cleaning, but the surfaces have retoned naturally and nicely in medium and olive-brown shades. Obverse a bit tight to 12 o'clock, reverse to 6 o'clock, all major design elements bold and fully appreciable. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 445. NGC ID: 2B3U.
