Western Europe, Spain, Toledo, reign of Carlos III. A Toledo cavalry sword mounted primarily in steel, with a brass-faced grip, of a type regulation for troop cavalry furniture. The blade is broad, straight, and three-faced to a point, inscribed with "POR EL REY CARLOS III" on one face and "CAVALLERIA T.o 1776" on the other, with the crowned mark of the Real Fábrica de Toledo struck near the forte. The mounting includes an iron shell guard known in Spanish as the boca de caballo, straight quillons with budded terminals, and a single knuckle bow rising to an urn-shaped pommel, the steel with an overall patina. Swords of this type were used by mounted regiments in Spanish colonial service during the reign of Charles III. Item # 203311
