1782 Massachusetts Revolutionary War Tax Writ

Original Massachusetts tax collection warrant dated May 16, 1782, issued under the authority of Henry Gardner, Treasurer and Receiver-General of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Printed document with manuscript entries, directed to the sheriff of Lincoln County or his deputy, ordering the collection of delinquent taxes assessed under a resolution of the Massachusetts General Court dated October 24, 1781. The warrant concerns unpaid assessments levied to meet the expenses of the Commonwealth during the Revolutionary War, specifically identifying the town of Hollowell (Hallowell, present-day Maine). It authorizes the seizure and sale of property belonging to delinquent taxpayers and, if insufficient property could be found, their imprisonment until payment was made. Signed at the conclusion by an official on Gardner's behalf. An interesting Revolutionary War-era financial document illustrating the methods used by Massachusetts to collect taxes during the closing years of the conflict. Printed Commonwealth seal at top. Exhibits toning, staining, original folds and edge wear, with losses along the lower edge. Estimate $200 - $400
