1786 New Jersey Copper. Maris 17-b, W-4870. Rarity-3. Straight Plow Beam, Chess Knight, PLUKIBUS. Large Planchet. Overstruck on a 1787 Connecticut Copper. EF-40 (PCGS). SHI DS2, broken R appears as a K. Warm autumn-orange brown with chestnut highlights. Overstruck on a 1787 Connecticut copper, as is frequently the case with examples of this Maris number. The undertype's date is seen at 7 o'clock relative to the New Jersey obverse, and some faint traces of the design type are seen elsewhere as well. Faintly microgranular throughout both sides. Obverse with the tiniest of rim bruises at 4 o'clock, otherwise no marks of any great moment, reverse plainly shows much of the Connecticut copper undertype's legend, especially at LUKIBUS, where CONNEC is plainly evident under low magnification; tiny rim bruise above BUS, otherwise the reverse is not noticeably marked. A neat New Jersey copper. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from our Baltimore Auction of November 2012, lot 6558; Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of February 2013, lot 3016. PCGS# 522422. NGC ID: E5XB.
