1787 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 2b-A, W-6040. Rarity-2. Arrows in Left Talon, Horned Eagle. AU-50 (PCGS). Handsome surfaces are originally toned in a blend of deep copper and warmer chestnut brown. Both sides are hard and frosty, the planchet choice with no detracting flaws. Overall detail remains bold, as befits the assigned grade, the impression well centered on both sides, wear light and largely confined to the high points. One of the most distinct Ryder numbers in the Massachusetts cent series, the horn-like reverse die break atop the eagle's head gives the 1787 2b-A its popular name and makes it an integral part of a complete Guide Book set of early American coppers.
