1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 54-k, W-5295. Rarity-3. No Sprig Above Plow, Serpent Head. EF-45+ (PCGS). 118.3 grains. SHI DS3. A superb example of this iconic variety, long in the collection of the great Matthew A. Stickney, whose cabinet was first undertaken in 1843. Beautiful chestnut and olive-brown surfaces show significant gloss and showcase bold designs. NOVA is almost always soft on this variety, but on this piece it is bold as can be. The all-important horse head shows but little wear. The letters PLU in PLURIBUS are a bit soft, as is the first date digit. The obverse is ideally centered, reverse aligned to 10 o'clock with die edge visible opposite. A vertical planchet striation is present at upper right corner of shield, any other planchet striations are unimportant and make no impact on the outstanding visual appeal anyway. An arc of charcoal and maroon scale is present inside the obverse border above 3 o'clock. This is similar in quality to the Bushnell-Ryder-Boyd-Ford coin, though this piece is probably better struck on the obverse. A superb quality specimen with a similarly excellent provenance. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier from Henry Chapman's sale of the Matthew Adams Stickney Collection, June 1907, lot 308; later, our sale of the John "Jack" Royse Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6083. PCGS# 518. NGC ID: 2B4W. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
