1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 62-q, W-5350. Rarity-3. Sprig Above

Smooth and Original Maris 62-q New Jersey 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 62-q, W-5350. Rarity-3. Sprig Above Plow, Hidden WM. Large Planchet. AU-55 (PCGS). SHI DS3. A handsome example of this large planchet New Jersey copper, one of the varieties attributed to the Morristown Mint. Most features are sharply struck from these shallowly cut, but artistic dies, although the centers are soft with original planchet texture remaining within both the horse's neck and the shield; only some of the many strands of hair in the horse's mane are discernible. Traces of faded rose and olive-gold colors are evident on otherwise medium brown surfaces. The planchet is choice, free of significant flaws, sizeable marks, and otherwise potential detractions. Close inspection with a loupe reveals the vestiges of the hidden WM initials under the obverse leaf sprig for which this variety has become famous in recent years. The Maris 62-q is perhaps the most available and affordable Colonial copper signed by the author of one of its dies, in this instance Walter Mould. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. PCGS# 522415. NGC ID: 2X8V. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
