1788 Massachusetts Cent. Ryder 16-M, W-6410. Rarity-5. Period After MASSACHUSETTS. MS-62 BN (PCGS). A highly significant piece, this is not only one of just two Mint State examples of this Ryder number that we have offered in recent decades, but it also appears to be a newcomer to the modern census as of March of this year. Also a lovely coin, both sides have a generally hard, frosty texture that is free of all but minor planchet texture in the centers, which did not strike out. The strike is actually sharply executed in all but these areas, and it is well centered with just minor thinning to the border denticulation at right obverse and lower right reverse. Color is a lovely, medium walnut brown with hints of olive that deliver further eye appeal. Two minor planchet voids at the reverse border after the final letter S in MASSACHUSETTS are offered as potential provenance markers. This coin will surely garner much attention from advanced specialists in Massachusetts state coppers, and see spirited bidding. Provenance: From Heritage's March 2026 Signature Auction, lot 3323. PCGS# 948. NGC ID: 2B27. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
