1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 77-dd (DS3), i.e. 78-dd, W-5535. Rarity-2. Head Right, Running Fox Before Legend. Fine-12 (PCGS). 147.6 grains. Deep autumn-orange and chestnut brown patina dominates, right borders with crescents of steel-olive that are broader and lengthier on the reverse. Less than perfect centering explains why the left peripheral features are somewhat soft and run toward the edge of the flan. Overall design bold for a Fine grade example of the Maris 78-dd die state, surfaces microscopically rough, yet appear hard and tight with good gloss during in-hand appreciation. Provenance: From the John Bolger Collection. Purchased from Anthony Terranova, July 2002. PCGS# 524. NGC ID: AUKF. Click here for certification details from PCGS. Image with the PCGS TrueView logo is obtained from and is subject to a license agreement with Collectors Universe, Inc. and its divisions PCGS and PSA.
