Classic VF 1793 Chain Cent Sheldon-2 1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Chain Reverse. S-2, B-2. Rarity-4+. AMERICA, Without Periods. VF-20 BN (NGC). Breen Die State II. The otherwise charcoal-copper surfaces exhibit lighter golden-brown patina on most of the deign elements, the interplay between the two providing some semblance of a circulated cameo appearance. The sharpest features are the chain motif and denominations ONE CENT and 1/100, as usual for the type, but the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the word LIBERTY and the date are fully legible with most letters/digits suitably bold for the assigned grade. Liberty's portrait is a bit soft, yet fully outlined, and the details of her profile are crisp. The in-hand appearance is quite smooth for a mid-grade Chain cent, with no sizeable marks or other significant blemishes, although accuracy compels us to mention universal granularity in the fields, as well as a concentration of faint pin scratches on the portrait at central obverse. This is a pleasing VF for a challenging one-year design type from the early United States Mint, a coin that has much to offer both type collectors and early copper enthusiasts. PCGS# 1341.
