1795 Washington Grate Halfpenny. Musante GW-49, Baker-29, W-10990. Large Buttons. Copper. Lettered Edge. MS-63 BN (PCGS). 135.1 grains. Beautiful chocolate and olive-brown with soft accents of faded orange in the peripheries. Glossy throughout with slight prooflike flash in the fields that gives this exceptional eye appeal. Very nicely struck with the entirety of the grate and hearth ornamentation sharply expressed. In 1988, Walter Breen identified Grate halfpence with this edge device as very rare, noting that there were only "4 or 5 known" and citing only the Roper and Robison pieces. There are at least nine in our online archives, including this one. The examples Breen cited do not appear to match this one, nor do they seem to match the others in our archives, bringing this easily found total to 11. Rulau and Fuld noted about 10. This said, most do not have the overall quality, eye appeal or strike of this superb example. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Lawrence R. Stack Collection, November 2006; Sydney F. Martin; our sale of the Sydney F. Martin Collection, Winter 2022 Auction, November, lot 2050. PCGS# 743. NGC ID: 2B7K.
