1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-1. Rarity-3. MS-62 (NGC). OH.

Popular First Year 1796 Dime 1796 Draped Bust Dime. JR-1. Rarity-3. MS-62 (NGC). OH. Vividly toned and lustrous Uncirculated preservation for this historically significant early U.S. Mint issue. Both sides are frosty in texture with considerable semi-reflective qualities shining through dominant toning in steely-olive gray. Direct lighting also calls forth playful iridescent undertones in vivid antique gold, powder blue and salmon pink. There is a concentration of rather heavy adjustment marks at central obverse, as made, and largely explaining the softness of strike detail both there and at central reverse. The strike is otherwise bold for the type, centering good, overall design fully appreciable. With no marks of consequence, this flashy and colorful BU example would make an impressive addition to a Mint State type set. As the inaugural issue of both the design type and the denomination, the 1796 Draped Bust dime is a highly sought issue. As is the case with numerous first year issues in U.S. coinage history, many 1796 dimes were saved as mementos and, as such, Mint State survivors are among the most available in the Draped Bust series. Even so, demand for examples for type, date and variety purposes is high and attractive examples like this NGC MS-62 coin rarely remain on the open market for long.
