"1813" (1820-1866) Master Commandant Jesse D. Elliott, Battle of Lake

"1813" (1820-1866) Master Commandant Jesse D. Elliott, Battle of Lake Erie Medal. Julian NA-10. Copper, Bronzed. MS-64 BN (NGC). 65.0 mm. This is one of the nicest, most visually pleasing bronze strikings of this more elusive entry in the U.S Mint naval medal series that we can recall handling. It is sharply defined overall with no significant blemishes to surfaces dressed in blended autumn-orange and mahogany-brown. The reverse of this type was also used for Oliver Hazard Perry's medal (NA-17), and these two officers conducted a vigorous feud for decades over each other's roles at Erie on September 10, 1813. Elliott was defended by writer James Fennimore Cooper and a medal was privately struck to celebrate Elliott's defense. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Purchased from John Kraljevich, October 2013. Earlier from a Baldwin's auction in 1954. Click here for certification details from NGC.
