"1814" Brigadier General Eleazer W. Ripley Medal. Julian MI-19. Copper

"1814" Brigadier General Eleazer W. Ripley Medal. Julian MI-19. Copper, Bronzed. MS-65 BN (NGC). 65.0 mm. Beautiful reddish-mahogany brown patina blankets both sides of this smartly impressed, frosty to semi-reflective example. Carefully preserved and free of troublesome blemishes. Due to numerous delays for reasons that included Ripley's refusal to furnish a profile portrait of himself and dispute over his part in the two battles of Erie fought in 1814, the dies for this type were not finished until 1836, with the gold medal finally struck in March of 1838. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Click here for certification details from NGC.
