"1814" (post-1878) Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough / Battle of

"1814" (post-1878) Master Commandant Thomas Macdonough / Battle of Lake Champlain Medal. Julian NA-15. Bronze. MS-66 BN (NGC). 65.0 mm. Beautiful olive-orange and light mahogany patina on fully impressed, frosty to semi-reflective surfaces. A few faint carbon flecks in the expansive obverse field area are all that stand in the way of perfection for this exceptionally well-composed example. A scarce medal struck to mark MacDonough's victory on Lake Champlain, here struck from Charles E. Barber's replacement die prepared in 1878, with his initials C.B. on the exergue line at left. Provenance: From the Henry Mitchell Collection. Purchased from John Kraljevich, October 2013. Earlier from a Baldwin's auction in 1954. Click here for certification details from NGC.
