1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-10. Rarity-4. AU-58 (NGC). Lustrous Choice AU surfaces are toned light golden-mauve, with pale dusky-blue iridescence framing the devices. Scattered marks on both sides are individually unremarkable. This is a Condition Census example according to both Graham and Koenings. GR-10 shares its reverse with GR-11, but obverse cracks extending from the base of the date to star 13 and from stars 1 through 5 are distinctive. On the reverse, a prominent lump next to the eagle's right wing is visible even without a glass and provides the easiest pickup point for identifying the die. While weakness is evident at stars 7 and 8, the overall strike is bolder than on many other examples of the variety. Graham assessed GR-10 as Rarity-4 in 2012, while Koenings assigned it a Rarity-5 rating in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: Today I rate this die marriage R-5 (31 to 75 known). The digit 7 in the date is positioned much higher than the preceding 183. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from NGC.
