1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-14. Rarity-1. MS-61 (PCGS). Golden-pink iridescence clings to the central reverse devices against otherwise fairly even antique-silver surfaces on this Mint State GR-14 half dollar. Even with a glass, marks are quite minimal, giving the coin the appearance of a higher grade at first glance. Luster is muted, but the overall eye appeal is strong. In the late die state seen here, the reverse is heavily cracked around the periphery, with an additional crack extending through the shield, while another peripheral crack spans the lower half of the obverse. Jim Koenings Commentary: Koenings Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) rated this die marriage R-2. Additional research is needed for any R-1 or R-2 die marriage, particularly for examples with weak or stretched obverse stars, significant reverse rotation, or rare die states yet to be discovered. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
