1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-17. Rarity-1.

1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-17. Rarity-1. AU-58 (PCGS). Bright and lustrous, with rose and blue iridescence over otherwise brilliant surfaces, this GR-17 is most interesting for its advanced die state and approximately 45-degree counterclockwise rotation. Graham notes that early die states of the variety are normally aligned, with the rotation increasing as the dies progress and eventually reaching about 45 degrees, as seen here. Clash marks above both of the eagle's wings provide another indication of the advanced die state. Scattered marks are seen primarily on the obverse, though none are individually distracting. Jim Koenings Commentary: Another R-1 rarity; however, this die marriage is known with the reverse rotated as much as 45 degrees, and a prime die state could be exceedingly rare if found. Most specimens are very well struck, as here. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
