1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-3. Rarity-2. AU-58 (NGC). Golden-russet toning dominates, but rotation under a light reveals lustrous surfaces with isolated areas of brighter orange iridescence, while teal iridescence frames the peripheries of both sides. This is an early, though not prime, die state of the variety. A light die crack is visible on the obverse, extending from the rim to the tip of the bust. On the reverse, a die crack spans nearly the entire periphery, as it does on every known example. Boldly struck and attractive. Koenings assigned this variety a Rarity-4 rating in 2024, compared with Graham's earlier Rarity-2 assessment in 2012. Jim Koenings Commentary: Although 15 specimens were reported in my 2024 census, I ranked GR-3 as 19th rarest when I revised the rarity values in December 2024. Finding a late die state specimen was very difficult for me. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. Purchased from J.J. Teaparty, date not recorded. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4.
