1837 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Reeded Edge. 50 CENTS. GR-6. Rarity-3. MS-62 (NGC). Soft peripheral definition and weak dentilation are standard for this scarce variety, the only pairing in which either of these dies was used. This example actually displays better definition among the reverse dentils than is typically seen. A Condition Census example, this solidly Mint State coin offers relatively smooth, lustrous surfaces framed by pale golden-rose toning, most noticeably on the obverse. A thin crack connecting stars 2 and 3 is also noted. Graham assigned the variety a Rarity-3 rating in 2012, while Koenings assigned it Rarity-4 in his 2024 census. Jim Koenings Commentary: My Koenings' Reeded Edge Half Newsletter #44 (12-15-22) rated 1837 GR-6 as R-4 (76 to 200 known), and my Koenings' Newsletter #64 (12-15-24) retained the R-4 rating. It comes with a weak bust and is known to have significant reverse rotation. Graham rated this die marriage R-3. Provenance: From the Jim Koenings Collection. PCGS# 6176. NGC ID: 24G4.
