1843 Braided Hair Cent. N-6. Rarity-1. Mature Head, Large Letters. MS-64 RB (PCGS). Grellman Die State b. This handsome piece exhibits soft gray-brown patina on surfaces that retain plenty of original, vivid, mint red color, especially in the field areas close in to many of the design elements. Hints of olive at Liberty's profile and at the back of the neck are also noted for the obverse. The central high points of the portrait are soft, but the strike is bold to sharp elsewhere, including at the borders, where full denticulation is complete and generally crisp. Writing in the 2021 edition of his reference The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents: 1840-1857, Bob Grellman reports seeing 20 Mint State survivors from the 1843 Newcomb-6 die pairing, "nine of those have a significant amount of mint red remaining, several more show traces of mint red." This PCGS MS-64 RB numbers among our finer offerings for the variety in recent years. Provenance: Ex Matthews Collection. PCGS# 403944. BASE PCGS# 1851. NGC ID: 2269.
