1856 "Hidalgos"

1856 "Hidalgos" Mexico District. 1r. Yellow and 8r. Lilac, the latter being an especially fine example, the 1r. with clear margins, on cover to Veracruz dated 1858 (March 3rd), cancelled with the very scarce oval "Administración Gral. de Correos" and additionally struck "Por el extraordinario del paquete Inglés", meaning express rate sent via the English packet. The express rate was double the normal rate, so in this period it would have been 8r. (¾ ounce) or 10r. (1 ounce); instead it paid 9r. beyond 16 leagues, this being most unusual. Cert. MEPSI (2026). Scott 2, 5.
