1864 Two-Cent Piece. Large Motto. MS-67 RD (PCGS).

Phenomenal 1864 Two-Cent Piece PCGS MS-67 RD with a Pop of 6/0 1864 Two-Cent Piece. Large Motto. MS-67 RD (PCGS). Fiery orange-red surfaces are boldly lustrous and betray only the most delicate iridescent pink and olive highlights. Well struck up, the details are crisp and the surfaces smooth to remain free of detracting blemishes. The two-cent piece made its debut in 1864 at a time when gold and silver coinage had long since been absent from circulation in the Eastern and Midwestern states due to the economic turmoil and uncertainty brought about by the Civil War. Struck in bronze, the new denomination was not subject to hoarding and, as such, initially proved popular in commercial channels. Mintages were correspondingly high in 1864 and 1865, but with the end of the Civil War in the latter year, production fell off rapidly through the series' end in 1873. The 1864 Lage Motto is the most plentiful issue in this series, and also as a first year issue it is understandably popular for type purposes. Enough were saved at the time and subsequently preserved with enough care that even full Red Gems in MS-65 are easily obtained under normal market conditions. The same cannot be said of coins at the MS-67 RD level, however, for the awe-inspiring Superb Gem offered here is one of the six finest known to PCGS. A phenomenal condition rarity set for inclusion in the finest type set of classic U.S. Mint coinage. Provenance: Property of a Texas Gentleman. PCGS Population: 6; 0 finer. PCGS# 3578. NGC ID: 22N9.
