Unrivalled 1865 Judd-423 Liberty Seated Quarter 1865 Pattern Liberty Seated Quarter. Judd-423, Pollock-495. Rarity-7-. Silver. Reeded Edge. Proof-67 Deep Cameo (PCGS). CAC. Obv: The same design that the Mint used to strike regular issue 1865 Liberty Seated quarters. Rev: An eagle with outstretched wings and a shield on its breast clutches an olive branch and a group of three long, slender arrows in its talons. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination QUARTER DOLLAR is below. This is an awe-inspiring Superb Gem that surely ranks as the finest known for the type. Otherwise brilliant, the surfaces reveal delicate champagne-pink peripheral highlights as the coin rotates under a light. Cameo contrast is deep and awesome, providing outstanding visual appeal alongside full strike detail and virtually pristine surfaces. The uspatterns.com website calls Judd-423: Paquet's reverse design with tall letters. It is very likely these were struck deliberately for sale to collectors circa 1868 as opposed to being true patterns. Its first sales occurrence was in the October 1870 Mason & Company sale of the Fewsmith Collection. According to the same source, fewer than 10 specimens are confirmed. Provenance: Ex possibly Dr. J. Hewitt Judd; Abe Kosoff's "Illustrated History", lot 293; Abe Kosoff, August 3, 1971; Harry W. Bass, Jr.; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Harry W.
