1866 Pattern Shield Nickel. Judd-531, Pollock-586. Rarity-8. Nickel. Plain Edge. Proof-65+ (PCGS). Obv: The same design that the Mint used to coin regular issue 1866 Shield nickels. Rev: The denomination 5 CENTS within a laurel wreath with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above. The word CENTS is slightly curved. Andy Pollock (1994) describes Judd-531 as "an incongruous muling having the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on both sides." Only two examples are confirmed, per Saul Teichman, and this is the finer. It is a smartly impressed, razor sharp Gem Proof with delicately toned surfaces dressed in golden-gray iridescence. Provenance: Ex Herbert I. Melnick, Inc.'s sale of the R.K. Hoffman Collection, November 1982, lot 46; our (Bowers and Merena's) Cabinet of Lucien M. LaRiviere, Part II sale, March 2001, lot 1017, as PCGS Proof-64; Bob R. Simpson; Heritage's sale of the Bob R. Simpson Collection, November 2020 Signature Auction, lot 3148. PCGS# 60728. NGC ID: 29LH. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
